Kroger in Frisco to sell food and dining table, too

(Frisco) - The newly opened Kroger Marketplace in Frisco not only sells food, but also the dining table it goes on, along with sofas, recliners, lamps and other home decor merchandise.

For the nation's second-largest grocery chain, the 123,000-sf hybrid supermarket and discount store at 12221 Custer Rd. is an answer to competition from Walmart Supercenters and Target's expansion into groceries.

Kroger Marketplace stores are more expensive to build — $17 million vs. $13 million for a traditional store.

Along with the Fred Meyer Jewelers in the front of the store, bed and bath, window coverings and a wall of decorative pillows contribute to the effort to be a one-stop shopping experience. Vacuum cleaners and home storage aisles can also be found, reminiscent of a discount store.

Kroger is planning three more Marketplace stores in North Texas this year and next in Little Elm, Fort Worth's Alliance Town Center and Mansfield.

Kroger is also introducing its Fresh Fare concept to the area in a former Albertson's location in Fort Worth, near Texas Christian University. Fresh Fare sells more fresh foods and prepared meals than a traditional supermarket. It's designed for people who shop almost daily for their meals.

Early next year, Kroger plans to open a Fresh Fare store near downtown Dallas on the site of the former Loews Cityplace movie theater, across from a Target.

(January 7, 2010) Due to inclement weather, trash and curbside recycling services for Frisco residents with Thursday collection will be delayed one day to Friday, January 8.

Collections for residents who normally have Friday service will begin Friday, January 8 once Thursday’s collections are completed. If Friday collections are not completed on Friday, service will continue on Saturday, January 9. If your trash is not collected on Friday, please leave your cart out on Saturday for service.

Frisco Cares Children’s Clinic, 6811 Oak Street, will be offering quality health care services to adults beginning Aug. 27. The clinic has been serving uninsured children since 2005.

The clinic will open its doors for patient registration at 5 p.m. and Dr. Mitra Canales, American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certified specialist, will begin seeing patients at 6 p.m. Dr. Canales speaks Spanish and Farsi as well as English.

Uninsured adults from Frisco and surrounding areas will be seen for an office visit fee of $10. Prescriptions, if necessary, may be provided free of charge.

Many events lead to National Night Out

The ever popular National Night Out event that neighborhoods and residents of The City of Frisco have come to love and look forward to each year is to be held later this year. This year’s National Night Out for Frisco is set for Oct. 13, which is one week later than the date set for most other Texas cities.

National Night Out festivities begin with a Battle of the Badges blood drive that will run Sept. 23n26 at various locations throughout the city. The annual blood drive matches the city’s finest police and fire departments against one another to see who can donate the most, all going to a charitable cause. The blood drive is followed up by the Green Home, Health & Safety Fair to be held 9-1 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Frisco Athletic Center , 5828 Nancy Jane Lane. The fair is designed to promote safety, education, and awareness within the community.

Frisco Camp exposes students to new careers

Obama signs mortgage bill into law

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said homeowners facing foreclosure would have a second chance under a measure he signed into law on Wednesday, but he added consumers still must live within their means.

The law encourages banks to spare homeowners from foreclosure and cracks down on lenders who take advantage of them. The bill passed Congress earlier this week and Obama bypassed a promised five-day waiting period to make it law.

Smoke-Free Frisco Considers Cigar Bar Exception

Frisco recently enacted and is enforcing an indoor smoking ban, but city leaders are considering granting an exception for a cigar bar.

The city was recently approached about the possibility of building a free-standing cigar bar in Frisco Square, the property bookended by City Hall and Pizza Hut Park.

"I'd like to think government is flexible and always look for ways to work with our local community and local businesses," Mayor Maher Maso said.

About 20 minutes; that’s how long Google maps states it takes to get to the Plano Dog Park when driving from Frisco. A hop, skip, and a jump; that’s all it’ll take to get you and your dog to the Frisco Dog Park when it’s built. Trying to get a dog park built isn’t an easy feat. Yet, that didn’t stop a volunteer organization found at www.friscodogpark.org from adopting this lofty goal. In September 2007, this group began imploring for the attention of the Parks and Recreation Board. The volunteer team assures us that The City staff, Parks & Recreation Board, and City Council members have been very helpful in explaining the obstacles that need to be overcome to ensure that the valuable project becomes a reality. As one would expect, the main challenge is funding. The volunteer team, made up of nearly 700 people, requests that people sign up on their website as supporters. Periodically the number of supporters is reported to the City Council and Parks & Recreation Board, which helps these groups understand how many people are in favor of attaining a dog park in Frisco.

Swine flu: FISD takes precautions, monitoring

The Frisco Independent School District has issued the following press statement in regard to concerns about swine flu in North Texas. Updates will be provided as available.

FISD is in contact with local health officials in Collin and Denton Counties as they all work to monitor swine influenza and to protect our citizens. At present, there are no confirmed or probable cases in Collin or Denton Counties. Surveillance measures have been heightened and all are working closely with area physicians and hospitals, as well as national and state health agencies.

Frisco Cyclists See Signs Of Progress On Roads

Cyclists in Frisco are finally getting what they have been praying for. More than 300 signs will be going up along some major roadways, reminding drivers to share the roads with cyclists. It's an effort to make the Frisco area safer for those on bikes.

"A lot of us are on the road and it can get a little dangerous," explained bicyclist Jeff Ellis. He was among a group who showed up to watch the signs go up. Ellis loves riding in Frisco because of all the open spaces and hills.

Collin County clear of swine flu

No cases of the deadly strain have been reported locally, but health officials are continuing to monitor the situation.

Even though other parts of the nation and Mexico are starting to feel the effects of the swine flu outbreak, Collin County so far has a clean bill of health.

Officials from the Collin County Health Care Services Department confirmed that they have found no documented cases of the "Swine Influenza A" virus in the Collin County area as of Tuesday.

Flame and bang seen in Frisco is safe

A gas flare and loud noise may startle residents Thursday morning, but the 50-foot high flame is only part of regular utility work along south Custer Road between Eldorado Parkway and State Highway 121.

On Thursday morning, Atmos utility crews will be clearing (or flaring) a 16-inch natural gas pipeline. The flaring is necessary to relocate the pipeline on south Custer Road, between Eldorado Parkway and State Highway 121.

FISD board meets April 20

The board of trustees of the Frisco Independent School District will meet 7:30 p.m. April 20, rather than April 13 as regularly scheduled.

The board's meetings are regularly scheduled the second Monday night each month at the FISD administration complex, 6928 Maple St., Frisco. Meetings may occasionally be rescheduled, according to the FISD's web site: www.friscoisd.org.

There was no agenda posted as of Sunday night for the April 20 meeting.

Mall operator says Chapter 11 filing won't affect shopping at Galleria, Stonebriar, other centers

That's the message General Growth Properties Inc., the second-largest U.S. mall operator, struggled to get out Thursday after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The company said none of its 200 malls – including several in the Dallas area – is closing and shoppers shouldn't notice anything different. But there's a chance your favorite mall could be sold over the next few months, the company said.

The City of Frisco has new, mandatory water restrictions for summer months which emphasize watering efficiently and reducing waste. Last night, the Frisco City Council approved the plan.

As of today, the City of Frisco's new Water Management Plan takes effect.

This new plan encompasses a Drought Contingency Plan and a Water Efficiency Plan. Under the new Water Efficiency Plan, outdoor watering is restricted to two days per week and is based on residents' trash and recycling service schedule and an additional, designated day.

NEW YORK – Wall Street is getting the good news it wants on the economy's biggest problems: banks and housing.

Investors reignited a two-week rally Monday after hearing the government's plan to help banks remove as much as $1 trillion in bad assets from their books and home sales showed a surprise increase. Major stock indexes jumped as much as 4 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which rose nearly 300 points.

The Treasury Department said its plan would rely on the government's $700 billion financial rescue fund, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., as well as private investors.

Faces of Frisco ISD: Riddle Teacher Keeps Himself, Others Running

Faces of Frisco ISD is a monthly feature highlighting some of the untold stories of FISD and the people who make FISD special.

Hamlin Jones of Riddle Elementary, had never run a competitive race in his life until the Gary Burns Fun Run of 2005. But that was the first step into a life-changing adventure.

The Gary Burns is the major fundraiser for Frisco Education Foundation and campuses often bring teams to run in the event. Some campuses take their running more seriously than others. Superintendent Rick Reedy regularly takes employees who beat his time to lunch after the event.

“Mia Bennett (principal of Riddle at the time) said you’ve got to run Gary Burns! I had never run a 5K. But I ran it in 20 minutes and took 20th place,” Jones said.

Eleven Centennial Orchestra students distinguished themselves by qualifying on Saturday for the state UIL solo & ensemble competition to be held in Austin in May. To achieve this honor and represent the students had to perform a grade one solo from memory or perform a grade one work with an ensemble and receive the highest rating by their judge.

Apetitos – The Little Restaurant That Could

Perhaps the third time is the charm when it comes to Apetitos and the ladies who dined with me last week. You see, on the corner of Teel and Main is a little Mexican Restaurant with big dreams. It wanted to play with the big engines of food service and provide scrumptious Mexican food to all who wished to dine there, but no matter how many laid tracks to the little restaurant, it just wasn't ready to carry a big load of diners. Families in far north Frisco wanted to enjoy Apetitos and would roll in only to find that the food was late to the table, not available or simply not desirable. Apetitos has been persistent and its owners just knew that given a chance they could be the little Mexican Restaurant that could...and they have!

With some amount of trepidation, I agreed to review Apetitos because my mama always said, "If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say nothin' at all." I was fearful that this would be one of those instances. At first glance, the table was dressed out with bowls of lightly salted, airy chips and an entirely desirable salsa that was a hint pecante sauce and chunky with pico de gallo. I actually spoke aloud to my friend that this was already a nice improvement. Our waiter came straight to the table to take our drink orders and even had suggestions for us. I took his advice and thoroughly enjoyed the Raspberry Ice Tea. Apetitos does have a full bar but this was lunch and we had business on the table and a full agenda. Wait, that hasn't stopped me before! Oh well, there's next week!

One of our guests arrived with a hungry and fussy two year old. This child wasn't about to wait for the grownups to decide on which platter they would feast and our waiter made immediate note of that. He suggested that he could bring the little one's vittles as soon as possible. Like a shot, the order arrived to sooth the bitty beast at the end of the table. Of course, it also helped to have a quick thinking mama to manage things but nonetheless the gesture was greatly appreciated.

The nuances of the little restaurant were that of a big Mexican chain with ample but quiet festive music dancing in the background, notes of flavors wafting from the kitchen and never ending drinks that seemed to refill themselves before you had to ask. Our meals were classics that anyone can find in any Mexican restaurant but we took particular delight in the fact that the owner highlights that on select plates, they use genuine Velveeta. Who the heck doesn't love Velveeta! On most other meals they use real cheese and a sweet tomato sauce that is distinctive to Apetitos. We scarfed down Enchiladas, Chicken Flautas with the afore mentioned sauce, and Beef and Chicken Tacos Al Carbon grilled to a tender, tasty perfection. Often beans and rice are merely plate fillers you may or not eat. At Apetitos, the beans have a chuck wagon flavor that I enjoyed so much I actually cleaned my plate of legumes. For those of you not interested in the musical fruit, a side salad is easily substituted. While salt seems to be the all time favorite spice of the chef, the food was far better than we had anticipated and we rejoiced that Apetitos had realized that they knew they could do better and they actually did it. This little Mexican Restaurant that could, has, and we invite everyone to return to Apetitos. I sincerely hope that your experience is as good as ours was, and that families in far North West Frisco will be all aboard with Apetitos.

Frisco chamber names Felker president-CEO

The Frisco Chamber of Commerce has named one of its own as president and CEO.

Following discussion and action at their board meeting Friday, the chamber’s board of directors announced that Tony Felker has been named its president-CEO, effective immediately.

“We are pleased, proud, and honored to have the opportunity to have Tony as our new president,” said Steve Watten, chairman of the board.

“Tony brings a familiarity with the Frisco chamber and community that is unique, and he has a vested interest in the chamber, both personally and professionally,” Watten added.

Felker has been employed at the Frisco Chamber of Commerce for the last four and a half years, most recently serving as vice president of business development.

(November 11, 2008) The City of Frisco offers residents ‘tips’ for tackling rodents in neighborhoods — and reminds homeowners it’s common for neighborhood rodent populations to rise as temperatures drop.

“Because the weather is changing, rats and mice are seeking warmer habitats,” said Greg Carr, Code Enforcement and Animal Control Administrator. ”Residents who live near construction or newly cut fields or farmland may also experience an increase of rodents in their area since construction and plowing displaces the rats and mice from their natural habitats.”

Carr says there are several steps homeowners and residents can take to
deal with any influx of rodents.

* Hire exterminator and use consistent pest treatment
* Keep landscaping and grass cut
* Seal trash containers
* Do not leave pet food ‘out’ once your pet has eaten
* Pick up trash and debris
* Keep garage doors closed
* Seal holes, cracks and entryways around pipes with steel wool or wire screen. (Holes as small as quarter inch will allow entry into a building)
* Repair water leaks and drips, which provide pests a water source

The City of Frisco does not provide rodent control programs on private property for several reasons.

“City staff can’t enter private property to address rodent issues without permission,” said Carr. ”Plus, we (city staff) don’t place baits out in
public areas because of the risk to pets and children. That’s why we recommend homeowners contract with exterminators to devise a pest control program which best fits their own home and family needs.”

Carr adds, if one homeowner is baiting or treating for rodents — but the neighbor isn’t taking the same action - the problem will merely move next door. ”A continuing abatement program involving all homeowners (or the entire HOA) is the best defense against rodent infestation,” said Carr.

Should you find dead rats or mice, animal control officers recommend you put the rodents in a sealed plastic bag and place in the trash.

Follow these directions for cleaning areas where rodent ‘droppings’ are found:

* Wear rubber, latex or vinyl gloves
* Soak area with disinfectant (water/bleach solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water)
* Remove waste with paper towels. Do not sweep or vacuum area. Such action can potentially spread viruses through the air.
* Wash exposed clothing and bedding
* Wash hands with soap and water after removing gloves
* Use professional service to clean heating and cooling ventilation systems

(November 7, 2008) "Salute The Troops" and show off your community spirit by attending Frisco's Annual Community Parade tomorrow, Saturday, November
8 beginning at 11 a.m.

Nearly 100 parade entries including school bands, choirs, baton twirlers, scouts and drill teams - plus police, fire and military vehicles will travel east on Main Street, beginning at Frisco Street near Pizza Hut Park. The parade route ends at North County Road.

Veterans will be showcased, including Congressman Ralph Hall, who is this year's parade Grand Marshal. Congressman Hall represents Texas' 4th District. He joined the U.S. Navy on December 10, 1942, serving as a lieutenant (senior grade) aircraft carrier pilot from 1942 to 1945. Hall was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980 and has been re-elected to each succeeding Congress. Congressman Hall was selected as Ranking Member of the Committee on Science and Technology for the 110th Congress.

FC Dallas players, as well as 'Duece' - the Frisco RoughRiders mascot - and representatives from the Dallas Stars will be joining this family favorite tradition dating back decades.

Homecoming royalty from all four high schools, along with the varsity football teams from each school participate in this tradition, too. Even Santa Claus will be here, arriving in a holiday train.

Downtown Main Street will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. Parking is available at several city owned lots. Parade goers who park throughout downtown neighborhoods are encouraged to be mindful of residents'
driveways and mailboxes.

Eldorado Parkway Closed Between F.M. 423 and Teel Beginning Friday, Nov. 7

(November 5, 2008) Eldorado Parkway will be closed to through traffic between F.M. 423 and Teel Parkway starting at 7 p.m. Friday night, November 7, as part of TxDOT’s widening project. The roadway is expected to reopen by 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 8.

During the closure, traffic heading west on Eldorado Parkway will have to turn left or right at Teel Parkway and use Panther Creek Parkway or Main Street as an alternate route. In the eastbound direction, only local traffic will be allowed to continue east past F.M. 423. All eastbound through traffic will have to turn left or right at F.M. 423 and use Panther Creek Parkway or Main Street.

FRISCO — Frisco City Council members say complaints are coming in about gas prices: They seem to be higher in this Dallas suburb than everywhere else.

For example, in neighboring Plano you can get a gallon of unleaded regular at the Sam's Club at Spring Creek Boulevard and Avenue K for $2.39.

in Frisco, at the Shell station at Preston and Lebanon, gas is going for $2.68 a gallon. Do the math — that's a difference of 29 cents, or nearly $6 for a 20-gallon fill-up.

"We don't have that kind of money," said Frisco motorist Louise Fischer. "We are just ordinary people, working and doing what we need to do for our family."

Frisco looks at options to revive public transit

A transportation consultant has recommended that Frisco launch a flex-route bus within the city, shuttle service to a Plano DART station and a commuter bus to downtown Dallas.

The consultant's proposal suggests a seven-year plan for launching public transit services, some of which could begin a year after adopting the plan. The City Council heard about the study last month but took no action.

Council member Tony Felker asked staff for a work session on the study.

FRISCO, Texas -- An award-winning Texas art teacher who was reprimanded after one of her fifth-grade students saw a nude sculpture during a trip to a museum has lost her job.

The school board in Frisco has voted not to renew Sydney McGee's contract after 28 years. She has been on administrative leave.

The teacher took her students on an approved field trip to a Dallas museum, and now some parents are upset.

The Fisher Elementary School art teacher came under fire last April when she took 89 fifth-graders on a field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art. Parents raised concerns over the field trip after their children reported seeing a nude sculpture at the art museum.

The parents had signed permission slips allowing their children to take part in the field trip.

Man dies in double shooting in Frisco

Police received a 911 call from the woman at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the man's home in the 8500 block of Pebblebrook Drive.

Officers arrived at the home and found the man dead and the woman who had sustained a gunshot wound, according to police.

The woman was taken to Parkland by CareFlite.

The woman, whose condition and identity have not been released, was able to give officers a description of an attacker, police said.

Police said they have a person of interest who might be the shooter.

Frisco Outdoor Warning Sirens

Ever wonder what those sirens were for? Well the City of Frisco has 24 outdoor warning sirens that have been placed strategically throughout the city. The system uses several different and unique tones to alert the residents of Frisco about any imminent approach of severe weather and other emergencies that require immediate notification.

Back in November of 2007, the Frisco Fire Department took a unique approach to proactive siren testing and began sounding its outdoor warning sirens every Wednesday at noon to prepare for the 2008 severe weather season. The department has found that the weekly testing has become a significant benefit to maintaining the system's readiness and current plans are to continue during the testing.

Now the Fire Department will sound the sirens on days when the skies are overcast and gray but not threatening; however, when severe weather is in the forecast, the sirens will not be sounded unless there is an actual emergency. Full Story

While North Texas' housing market decline has accelerated in recent months, analysts are still betting that the Dallas-Fort Worth area won't see measurable price declines. Indeed, the latest report from mortgage insurance firm PMI Group says that D-FW is one of the last places in the country likely to see a drop in home prices during the next couple of years. There's less than a 1 percent chance that home prices will fall here, according to PMI's spring risk index report, which was released Thursday. If you are a Frisco resident and haven't been to a Texas Tornados Hockey game at the Dr. Pepper Center, you are missing out bigtime. I went last Friday and had a most excellent time. Hockey is a fun sport, and it's so close, like right down the street on Gaylord near Stonebriar Mall. The crowd is active, there is beer, snacks and loud rock music during intermission. The bathrooms are clean and the entertainment is superb.

At first I was a little put-off by the violence, (I'm such a girl) but in no time I started screaming, "hit him in the face!" There's something so raw about violence in the name of sport, as in war, suddenly the unthinkable is justified. Maybe it was the other team's posse acting smug when they were ahead by three points. We couldn't let those bucket thumping wannabees win! It's our Dr. Pepper Center! That did it. I cheered for the other team to get beaten, tripped and shoved louder than the rest of the crowd (I also have a loud mouth). What a great release! You need to come and support your local Frisco Hockey Team!!!

Kids will love this sport and the Dr. Pepper Center and the Frisco Texas Tornados. You've got to visit. I'll be at the next game with my nephew. It's on April 11th at 8pm. This game will be round 1 of the playoffs against Topeka. (Look at me, I actually sound like I know what I'm talking about.) Pinch me. We're in Frisco!

Faux finis (pronounced "foe") is French for looking or imitating something else. Through use of
various techniques, one can create the look of marble, wood, stone etc... over almost any surface.
Faux painting is all the rage in homes across the country. Today's faux technqiues are like artwork for your walls, adding instant warmth, texture and glamour to otherwise boring sheetrock. The "spa look" is another popular faux finish obtained through use of Venetian Plaster with a light faux overlay. The Fresco Wall Finish is another option for aged, light and airy appeal.

Wall Antiquing

Antiquing or "aging" is the faux painting technique that simulates natural wear and tear using paint glazes, crackle glazes, bees wax, paper, hammers, sandpaper, or chains to distress and weather an object, wall,... The aged antiqued effect can be achieved by using a latex or oil color glaze or varnish that looks like an aged, brown, color or by whitewashing and wiping most of the white wash off.

The Aged Crackle Finish is one that can look contrived unless done well. Distressing gives a wall an old-time worn feel, adding dimension and interest to a vintage or rustic interior. Wall waxing creates a soft textured surface can also be created with wax, paint and embossing powder. Antiquing creates homes and businesses with the "Old World" or "Italian Villa" aesthetic.

Hand Painting

Another way to add interest to your walls and ceilings is with Trompe L' Oeil Murals or those of the hand-painted variety.

Wall Texture

Texture your wall with tumbling stones or create the look of leather, bamboo, old world, stone, and plasters to set the mood for your furnishings. You can also achieve the look of stone such as granite, marble, slate or mosaic tile.

Venetian Plaster and plaster paint techniques require painted with a sheen such as eggshell or satin or on lime washed walls. Scrumble glazes in (warm colors like:burnt umber, burnt sienna, raw sienna, and yellow ochre) are applied to create areas of light and dark. This technique gives the Old World or Tuscan feel.

Faux Metallic

You can use paint to create a metallic look of copper, bronze, brushed metal, steel or gold and gold leaf.

Vera Elizabeth Guthrie-Nail, 42, was arrested at the intersection of State Highway 121 and Hebron Parkway in Carrollton after dropping her six-year-old daughter at school.
